OVAL-CUT DIAMONDS AND GEMSTONES

Considered to be a fancy cut, the popularity of oval cut diamonds and gemstones has exploded over the course of the past several years. The oblong shape oval diamonds have is quite different from the more geometric standard cuts people traditionally associate with jewelry, but it’s still an extremely elegant one that can make for a uniquely stunning piece. Additionally, oval cut diamonds look larger than round diamonds with similar carat weight, and oval-shaped diamonds can have a slimming effect on a wearer’s hand. Oval-cut diamonds and gemstones have existed for centuries, but it wasn’t until 1957 when a Russian-born diamond cutter by the name of Lazare Kaplan perfected the look. Today, it’s been seen on the fingers of Blake Lively, Serena Williams, Julianne Hough, Katherine McPhee, and others.

What is an Oval Cut Gemstone? As the name implies, oval-cut diamonds have an oval shape that greatly differentiates them from most other diamond cuts. They have 58 facets, meaning that they can still capture the same allure as round brilliant and other cut diamonds but with the added visual interest of an elongated shape. The style of oval cut diamonds and gemstones is one of the obvious positives, as it will instantly stand out amongst other cuts. The cut also has what’s known as the “bowtie effect” where a bowtie-like shape can sometimes be visible within the stone. This visual phenomenon is a result of the light refraction within an oval shape, as light can’t bounce back and forth as readily in the center of the diamond.

Another pro of the oval cut is their cost; typically around 25% less than a round cut diamond of the same weight. However, because the oval cut has a larger surface area, it typically appears bigger than similar round counterparts.  This gives the wearer a bigger look for less money!
