Rising from the Ashes: The Creation of My Custom Phoenix Ring

Part 1 – The Consultation

For a long time, I carried an idea in my heart—a symbol that could capture my journey of transformation after one of the most difficult times in my life. I wanted something more than jewelry; I wanted a reminder of how I rose from my own ashes, stronger and more self-assured than ever before. That’s when the image of a phoenix came to mind—a timeless emblem of rebirth, courage, and renewal.

But knowing I wanted a phoenix ring and knowing how to make it a reality were two very different things. I wasn’t sure if I needed to start with a design idea or begin by choosing the gemstones and let the design follow. It was both exciting and intimidating to realize I could create something so personal from scratch.

That’s when I turned to Jennifer Farnes at Revolution Jewelry Works. I had admired their work for years and knew they specialized in bringing meaningful, one-of-a-kind designs to life. From the moment we sat down together for the consultation, I could tell Jennifer understood exactly what I wanted this piece to represent.

We talked about my story—the challenges I had faced, the strength I had found, and how the phoenix symbolized transformation. Jennifer listened closely, asked thoughtful questions, and helped me begin to shape a vision. Together, we discussed possible gemstones that could capture the fiery spirit of the phoenix—warm reds, oranges, and yellows that shimmered like rising flames.

By the end of our consultation, I felt both grounded and inspired. Jennifer helped me find clarity in my vision, and I left feeling confident that we were creating more than a ring—we were creating a symbol of my personal rebirth.

This was just the first step in an incredible process that brought art, technology, and craftsmanship together in ways I never imagined.

Part 2 – CAD/CAM Renderings

After my initial consultation with Jennifer at Revolution Jewelry Works, I couldn’t stop thinking about how the phoenix design might come to life. I had shared my story, my inspiration, and a few rough ideas about gemstones—but beyond that, I couldn’t quite picture how it would all come together. I knew I wanted the ring to be bold yet elegant, symbolic yet wearable. What I didn’t know was how Jennifer would take those scattered thoughts and turn them into something real.

That’s where the CAD/CAM rendering process began. Using computer-aided design software, Jennifer was able to create a detailed, three-dimensional model of my phoenix ring. This step is where technology meets artistry—it allows every curve, claw, and gemstone to be perfectly planned before any metal or stone is touched.

When Jennifer showed me the renderings for the first time, I was completely surprised—in the best possible way. She had taken my emotions and ideas and transformed them into a design I couldn’t have envisioned myself. The phoenix appeared to rise gracefully from the band, its wings flowing upward in motion, holding gemstones that seemed to glow with life. It was better than I could imagine—a true reflection of both my story and her creativity.

Seeing the digital model made everything feel real. I could finally visualize the ring that I couldn’t conceptualize. And while the renderings were breathtaking, Jennifer reminded me that this was still just the beginning—the blueprint for what would soon be cast into precious metal.

Part 3 – Wax Creation

After seeing the CAD renderings of my phoenix ring, I was amazed at how beautifully Jennifer had captured my vision. Actually, she’d gone far beyond what I could have ever imagined. The next step in the process was to bring that digital design into the real world through wax creation, and I couldn’t wait to see it take shape.

What surprised me most was how quickly the wax rendering was ready. Within days, I received a call from Revolution Jewelry Works to let me know that my ring had been 3D-printed in wax and was ready for me to see—and even try on my finger. I remember walking into the studio feeling a mix of excitement and nervous anticipation.

When she handed me the delicate wax model, I was amazed by the level of detail. Even though it wasn’t metal yet, I could clearly see the graceful curves of the phoenix wings and how the gemstones would be set. It was incredible to finally hold something tangible that had started as just a thought in my mind.

As I put the ring on my finger for the first time, the fit was perfect and the design flowed along my finger just as I had hoped where the weight of the head, body, and tail aligned nicely down my finger—exactly where it was meant to be. Even in wax, it carried the same emotional weight I had imagined. The fit was perfect, and I could already picture how it would look once cast in the precious metal we had chosen.

This step made the process feel even more personal and real. I wasn’t just imagining the phoenix anymore—I was wearing the beginning of it. Seeing the ring in wax allowed for any small adjustments before the next big stage: Investing, where the wax model would be prepared for casting.

Part 4:  Investing

Holding the wax model of my phoenix ring for the first time was surreal. Even though it was fragile and temporary, it already carried so much meaning. The next step in the journey was something I hadn’t known much about before—Investing—and it turned out to be one of the most fascinating parts of the process.

One of the jewelers explained that investing is how the jeweler prepares the wax model to be cast in metal. The delicate wax version of my ring would be placed into a small cylinder, and a fine plaster-like material—called investment—would be carefully poured around it. The investment material had to be mixed at just the right consistency and poured smoothly to ensure no bubbles or imperfections formed inside the mold.

Part 5:  Burnout, Casting, & Quenching

When I was at my appointment to try on my wax ring, we made an appointment two days later that was convenient for me to watch the next phase of the process called burnout, casting, and quenching.

Watching this part of the process made me realize just how much science goes into custom jewelry. What I found poetic was how the process mirrored the theme of my ring. The wax model, beautiful but temporary, was about to be encased and then transformed—just like how we sometimes have to go through intense pressure before emerging stronger. The investment stage felt symbolic of protection, preparation, and transformation—the calm before the fire.

Once the investment mold is set completely, the next stage would begin: Burnout, where the wax model would melt away, leaving only the perfect impression behind.

After the investment mold was set, it was time for the most dramatic and symbolic part of the process—Burnout, Casting, and Quenching. This was where my phoenix ring would truly be born from fire.

During the burnout stage, the cylinder containing the wax model was placed into a high-temperature kiln. As the heat slowly increased, the wax inside the hardened investment mold melted and burned away completely, leaving behind a hollow negative space in the exact shape of my ring. Watching this process felt powerful—the wax version, delicate and temporary, sacrificed itself to make way for something lasting and strong. It was a perfect reflection of the phoenix theme: destruction leading to rebirth.

Once the burnout was complete and the mold was perfectly clean, the real magic began—casting. Molten metal, heated to thousands of degrees, was carefully poured into the empty mold. The glowing metal rushed into every fine detail that once held wax, filling the space and solidifying into form. This was the moment where art, science, and symbolism came together in a fiery dance. My phoenix was finally taking shape, not in wax or digital renderings, but in solid, gleaming metal.

After cooling for the right amount of time, the mold was submerged in water—a step known as quenching. The sudden release of heat caused the water to flash-boil and the investment to break away, revealing the raw, newly cast ring inside. Seeing the rough metal version emerge from its plaster shell felt like witnessing the phoenix rise from the ashes—its rebirth complete, though it still needed refinement to truly shine.

Part 6 – Finishing

This final stage—Finishing—was where the artistry of human hands took center stage. The jeweler carefully cleaned away any remaining investment material, filed and refined the edges, and smoothed every tiny surface. Bit by bit, the rough cast transformed into a polished piece of art.

I was amazed at how much attention goes into this stage. The metal had to be shaped and finished with precision so the gemstones could sit perfectly in their seats. The polish had to highlight the movement of the phoenix without losing the fine details that made the design so meaningful. Every part of the ring was touched with intention.

Then came the moment I had been waiting for—the gemstone setting. Watching the fiery colors settle into the ring felt like watching the heart of the phoenix ignite. Each stone added warmth, energy, and emotion. The ring wasn’t just beautiful; it was alive with symbolism.

When I finally held the finished piece in my hands, I was overwhelmed. I had started this journey with only a vague idea and a desire to create something meaningful. Somehow, the team at Revolution Jewelry Works transformed that into a ring that was more powerful and beautiful than anything I could have envisioned.

The smooth polish, the glowing gemstones, the intricate lines of the phoenix—it all came together in a way that felt like a physical reflection of my story. A reminder that even after the hardest times, we can rise again. Stronger. Brighter. Reborn.

Wearing my phoenix ring now feels like wearing a piece of my journey, a symbol of resilience that I carry with me every day. And looking back, each step of the process—from consultation to finishing—was a transformation in its own way.

Just like the phoenix itself, this ring was shaped by fire, refined through pressure, and brought to life through patience, vision, and artistry.
